Get yourself a Cummins 3.9L 4BT.

It's a 4-cylinder that can embarass a 6.5L TD when it comes to making power and staying in one piece.

I think the issue with the emissions has to do with the low quality diesel offered in gas stations within the US of A. In my travels though Europe I was amazed to see 3 grades of diesel at gas station and only one grade of gasoline (premium-mostly used by motorcycles). If the quality diesel fuels where available in the USA, more people would be driving diesels.

Well Cummins has a 4 cylinder and they use it many other applications, i live right down the road from Columbus,Indiana where Cummins is and there have been a few rumors floating around of them putting a 4 cylinder of the B-Series in the Dakotas. As you said would be great beacause you'd get great fuel economy along with the greast power of a Cummins planted between the rails.

I'm curious, what is this 10,000 lbs everybody wants to tow?
the lastest tow ratings of 1/2 tons over 9000 lbs is insane.
any body towing that much with 1/2 ton suspension is a hazard.
sorry, back to subject,, If I was going to tow 10,000 lbs
I would just get the Isuzu N series, here in Canada it is marketed as GMC 3500 and up.

While the Cummins 3.9BT would probably make an excellent 1/2 ton pickup engine power wise, if I'm not mistaken, it has no balance shaft. Between that, and the 2 strong pulses per crankshaft revolution, vibration (both engine and torsional) would be hard if not impossible to tame, at least to the liking of the typical 1/2 ton truck buyer.

I doubt most 1/2 ton buyers ever tow that much weight but if nothing else, it's bragging rights for the manufacturers.

The components used on todays half tons are what was used on some 3/4 tons in the 90's, so the stuff is definately better than it has ever been in the half ton segment.

I once repowered a forklift with a 4BTA 3.9 Cummins.
replaced a six cyl naturally aspirated Perkins. the Perkins
was about 120 HP if I remember correct. the Cummins was 130. the highest rating at the time. It worked quite well but you are right about vibration, in a forklift ok but a pickup truck, only for a diesel nut. the fan bracket fell off once and something else, maybe it was the fan braket again.
The 3.9 does have balance shaft.

Itīs already build, but you donīt have it in US. In Brazil we have Ford Ranger 3.0l Power Stroke 160hp (163cv) at 3800rpm and 280lb-ft (38,7 kgfm) at 1600rpm - payload capacity 2336,8lb (1060kg)-, Toyota Hilux 3.0l (160hp), Chevrolet S10 2.8l (138hp), Nissan Frontier 2.5l 170hp at 4000rpm and 297,3lb-ft at 2000rpm - payload capacity 2215,64lb-, Mitsubishi L200 Triton 3.2l(162hp). All this midsize trucks can make 28mpg city and 35mpg highway. Top speed itīs about 115 mph for Nissan, Ford, Toyota and Mitsubish; and 109mph for Chevrolet.
