Why doesn't someone build a 4 cylinder diesel

Just a full sized work truck that will tow 10,000 with a decent payload for $25,000 to $28,000.
Seems like GM would have a natural with the Isuzu that they use in the N series.
I know it wouldn't be fast, and it might lose some speed on hills, but it would sure fit my need. It'd be easier for me to cost justify, and it'd get better mileage than the big 8 cyl gas trucks I've been buying.
Does anyone know? I must be missing something..

The vibration on a 4 cylinder diesel large enough for a full size truck able to tow 10,000lbs would be difficult to tame. Second, just because a manufacturer has access to a suitable engine doesn't make it a possibility.
Biggest problem here is the EPA, period. There are rumors and talk of smaller diesels for SUV's and half ton pickups in the next few years but I'll believe it when I see it. And you can bet you won't touch them for anything near the mid 20's in price.
The closest effort was the Jeep Liberty diesel although with 295 pounds feet of torque, towing 10,000 lbs would be slow at best. However, the socialist state of New York (and some others) didn't allow the sale of them as new vehicles.
Why don't you buy one of the current 3/4 ton diesels for your needs?

Wouldn't the EPA requirements need to be met by the Isuzu?

Medium-duty trucks have completely different emissions requirements than light-duty trucks. And then your typical 1/2 tons are also is in a different emissions class among the light-duty trucks as well.
I don't think many 1/2 ton buyers would accept the very truckish 4cyl diesel Isuzu uses in their medium-duty trucks.

There are several small displacment diesels on the horizon from just about every major manufacture (one is a Duramax). But as you already pointed out the EPA is the major sticking point. From what we've seen from the likes of Chevy and Ford look for a 6 cylinder diesel sometime around late 2008-2009.

Yes it would and that is one of the problems. The EPA is trying to clean the whole world on our backs. It is very likely that no matter what Isuzu does to the engine, it will not be able to meet EPA standards.
In that event, a clean sheet would be neccessary and that is what we are seeing with the rumored diesel offerings coming in the next couple years.

Thanks for all the great info everyone. Believe it or not, I've been daydreaming about a diesel truck with the capacities I mentioned for several years, but I'm also the guy that got by with 6 cyl gas trucks for a long time, so there may not be much of a market.
Does anyone have any info or links on the smaller displacement diesels coming out in a couple of years? Any hint of expected mileage?

I've seen some stuff here and there, but no links handy.
One thing that's a common trend though: less mpg. I love my '00 VW Jetta TDI and have modded the motor for relatively good performance. Average 45mpg driving like an idiot....but each new model that comes out has more hp, better performance, tighter emissions, and less mpg. I'm guessing it's the tighter emissions that's killing mpg because I didn't see a mpg change on mine when I modded for more power.

You're probably right since it wouldn't make any sense for a manufacturer to reduce MPG when higher MPG is possible with good performance, barring a conspiracy theory.
You'd think high MPG & performance would mean more efficient burning. Oh well, I guess I'll wait another year or two and see what happens.

Here' a link to Perkins, which is the engine used in the Ford Rangers over here in Iraq. Yes, I know it's just their home page, but the do make a 4 cylinder that gets around 30 mpg (roughly). http://www.perkins.com/cda/layout?m=69660&x=7
